A public memorial service for rapper Nipsey Hussle has been set for Thursday, April 11, 2019, at Staples Center, Los Angeles. The service is apparently being planned as a ticketed event with non-transferable tickets.
Nipsey’s family met with Staples Center officials to coordinate logistics and security. Staples Center was also the site of a public memorial in 2009 for the late singer Michael Jackson.
Nipsey Hussle, rapper and activist, was shot dead outside his clothing store on Slauson Avenue last Sunday, March 31, 2019. Nipsey, 33, was not only praised as an artist but was also revered for helping others in the community.
Nipsey Hussle’s shooting came a day before a scheduled meeting with LAPD Chief Michel Moore and Police Commissioner Steve Soboroff to talk about ways he could help stop gang violence.
In the meanwhile, Eric Holder who has been accused of shooting Hussle and has been charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. Police allege Holder had gotten into a dispute with Hussle earlier in the day and returned with a gun and started shooting.
Hussle, whose real name is Ermias Joseph Asghedom, was fatally shot Sunday in the 3400 block of West Slauson Avenue in Los Angeles. An autopsy performed Monday determined Asghedom was shot in the head and torso, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.
Nipsey Hussle, 33, was a long part of the underground rap circuit, and had struggled to find fame but began selling his own mixtapes, which hip-hop royalty Jay-Z once bought 100 of for $100 each.
He was nominated for Best Rap Album for Victory Lap, his first formal album that finally dropped last February after six years of teasing, but lost out to rap’s woman of the moment Cardi B.
Nipsey Hussle has two children, a son with his girlfriend, Lauren London, and a daughter from a prior relationship.
