On February 24, 2018, Bollywood lost its first female superstar Sridevi and after almost a year of her demise, her family including daughters Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor with father Boney Kapoor held a puja for Sridevi's first death anniversary at her maternal home in Chennai.
As per the Hindu Calender, Sridevi's death anniversary falls on February 14, 2019. The rituals were held in Chennai at her maternal home, which is adjacent to the residence of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Chief M. Karunanidhi. Boney Kapoor's younger brother Anil Kapoor and his wife Sunita Kapoor too attended the Puja in Chennai.
Sridevi breathed her last in Dubai. She had gone there to attend a family wedding. Losing Sridevi was a devastating piece of news for the fans, more so for her family. There were even rumours and reports about Sridevi was murdered and her accidental drowning was staged. However, the police investigation nullified those conspiracy theories and had concluded that the actress died of accidental drowning in a bathtub in her guest room at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Sridevi's guest appearance in the film Zero brought her memory alive on-screen. Sridevi was also going to be a part of Abhishek Verman's Kalank. The film which is being produced by Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala now stars Madhuri Dixit instead.
Meanwhile, Janhvi Kapoor, who made her debut in Dhadak, soon after her mom passed away spoke about how it has been a devastating experience for the family and she could not wrap her head around it because she was most attached to her mom. She channelized all her pain in her performance in Dhadak.
In May 2018, Sridevi was conferred with the Best Actress Award by the Indian government for her performance in Mom at the 65th National Film Awards.
