Today, June 07, 2019, the Bombay High Court has finally granted bail to Karan Oberoi in the rape case filed against him by a 34-year-old woman last month. It set the bail amount at Rs 50,000.
The court added that his lawyer must furnish all documents in support of his innocence by June 20, 2019, to the police station.
Justice Revati Mohite Dere stated that that though the FIR states that the first rape allegation was made in January 2017, it has to be read in juxtaposition with messages dated January 13, 2017.
The court observed that the woman had orchestrated the attack on herself and prima facie appears to have filed a second FIR against Karan Oberoi to deny him bail.
The court also reminded the police that the investigation must be fair and impartial and questioned the cops for not seizing the woman's phone for investigation.
Karan was arrested on May 06, 2019, after the woman, an astrologer, registered a complaint with the police accusing him of rape and blackmail on the pretext of marriage.
An FIR was registered at the Oshiwara Police Station in Mumbai under sections 376 (rape) and 384 (extortion) of the Indian Penal Code against Oberoi.
"Karan not only raped the woman and filmed the act but also demanded money from the victim threatening to release the video if she did not pay up," the police has stated, quoting the FIR.
A non-cognisable complaint (NC) was lodged by the woman against Karan in October 2018, where she accused him of using her financially. Incidentally, Karan, too, had filed an NC against her for mental harassment 10 days before that.
At that point, the girl had reached the media and had lashed out at Karan, revealing details about their association.
As an actor, Karan started his journey with Mahesh Bhatt's Swabhimaan (Doordarshan - 1995), where he played Bobby and went on to star in shows like Saaya (Sony Entertainment Television - 1998) and Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi (Sony Entertainment Television - 2003). He was also a member of A Band of Boys, which was formed in 2001, whose other members include Sudhanshu Pandey, Sherrin Varghese, Siddharth Haldipur and Chaitnya Bhosale.
Karan Oberoi was sent to 14 days of judicial custody on May 09, 2019, by an Andheri court.
