The trailer of Abhishek Chaubey's Sonchiriya has just hit the net and one must say that this one is not a patch on Shekhar Kapoor's Bandit Queen.

The two and a half minute trailer is raw, its earth and has loads of drama and action. The trailer depicts inter-gang wars between the dacoit groups, fighting to acquire control of central India back then. It tells us the horrifying tales of dacoity in the Chambal region during the 1975 Emergency.

With a dark theme prolonged over the course of the trailer, one keeps longing for a hook point that sadly never comes. Yes, the film has a great setting, but then I feel it just ends there.

While Sushant Singh Rajput dons a rustic look and looks out of place, Bhumi Pednekar suits her tough character. For me, the highlight of the trailer were the characters of both Manoj Bajpayee and Ranvir Shorey. Now, most of the actors mouth dialogues in the local language Bundelkhandi, which to me does not look convincing.

Set in Chambal, the film stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Bhumi Pednekar, Ashutosh Rana, Manoj Bajpayee, Ranvir Shorey, Jatin Sarna, and many others.

Abhishek Chaubey has earlier directed Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan in Udta Punjab, Madhuri Dixit, Huma Qureshi and Naseeruddin Shah in Dedh Ishqiya and Vidya Balan in Ishqiya.

"Bandits have been around for ages. They are criminals but it's a huge tradition in their society and life. There are so many layers to it. Why they were the way they were why they were bandits but they called themselves rebels so what was it that motivated them to live like that. It's a part of our history and culture and I'm really shocked that we're not telling more stories about them. In the West, it's an established genre which is still being explored." stated Abhishek, who has done extensive research on the subject.

Produced by Ronnie Screwvala, Sonchiriya will release on February 08, 2019.
